Chapter Six

“I can’t go to the ranch with you,” Eliza said.

“Why not? Big plans this weekend?”

She opened her mouth to say yes, then promptly closed it. She didn’t have any plans for the weekend, unless she went Christmas shopping. Not that she had to let him know that. Though Josh seemed smart enough to guess. Slowly she shook her head.

“Great, change into your jeans and let’s go.”

“I can’t,” she repeated.

“Why not?”

“Why are you asking me?” she asked suspiciously. “It seemed to me last weekend you couldn’t wait to get rid of me. You weren’t too happy about that impromptu barbecue because you were stuck with my company for that much longer.”

Slowly he smiled, and her heart skidded.

“Last weekend was business. You’ve decided to delay the foreclosure until we can get the money together, so this weekend will be purely pleasure.”

She shivered as his words evoked visions of the kind of pleasure she’d like to receive from Josh over the weekend.

“Nothing’s firm yet with Victor Holmes,” she said, torn.

She wanted to go.

She didn’t want to go.

She was afraid of where her feelings were leading her. And that could be a danger she dare not risk. She would not allow herself to fall for some charming cowboy with a devastating smile.

He shrugged. “Get changed.”

She hesitated for only a second She really did want to go.

“Okay. Wait here.”

He looked around the living room. “Hurry up.”

“I’m hungry. Can we get something to eat before leaving?”

She had skipped lunch again and couldn’t last until they reached the ranch.

“We’ll go for pizza.”

Eliza nodded and hurried down the hall to her room. Closing the door behind her, she was extremely conscious of Josh in her home. His showing up had come as a shock. She had heard nothing from him in the week since she’d last seen him, hadn’t expected to see him again.

Unless something went wrong with the way she handled Victor Holmes’s situation, of course. Then she could expect him to ride in with guns blazing.

Quickly taking off her suit and blouse, she began to change.
